It is occasionally known as Erythraean Sea. The name Red Sea signifies seasonal blooms, red-colored Trichodesmium Erythraeum near the water's surface. These blooms upon dying turn the blue-green water occasionally into reddish brown.

This color is not intense and is observed to vary along the expansive body of water. On the other hand, a theory favored by some scholars says that the name red refers to the direction South same as the name black in the Black Sea refers North.
